Fight Club

Conservative GOP Sen. Inhofe's middle name lately has been "vindication." He has probably been the leading political voice against Global Warming/Climate Change. He spent years being derided as "stupid," "anti-science," and of course a "tool of Big Oil." He was also, as it happens, correct and all of the sophisticates among the progressive left, and far too many moderate Republicans were
R-O-N-G wrong. Having won the battle and the war, Inhofe is looking to make sure the left's intellectual and political embarrassment is writ as large as possible: Climategate & the Law: Senator Inhofe To Ask For Congressional Criminal Investigation

Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) today asked the Obama administration to investigate what he called “the greatest scientific scandal of our generation” — the actions of climate scientists revealed by the Climategate Files, and the subsequent admissions by the editors of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report (AR4).

Senator Inhofe also called for former Vice President Al Gore to be called back to the Senate to testify.

“In [Gore's] science fiction movie, every assertion has been rebutted,” Inhofe said. He believes Vice President Gore should defend himself and his movie before Congress.

Just prior to a hearing at 10:00 a.m. EST, Senator Inhofe released a minority staff report from the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, of which he is ranking member. Senator Inhofe is asking the Department of Justice to investigate whether there has been research misconduct or criminal actions by the scientists involved, including Dr. Michael Mann of Pennsylvania State University and Dr. James Hansen of Columbia University and the NASA Goddard Institute of Space Science.

Inhofe is not what you would call prominent. The media has shown no interest in covering his activities, except to showcase what it considers to be his errors. (Maybe he should try criticizing other Republicans). But it's rare that a progressive initiative has been shown to be so full of BS in such a short period of time. I mean, just last fall, the entire progressive wing of US politics was triumphantly getting ready for what it considered to be the fait accompli Copenhagen summit. Now, their entire program is in tatters. By contrast, we had to wait 20 years before Losing Ground cataloged the pathologies arising from the Great Society and paved the (long) way to welfare reform.

Normally, the progressives don't have to account for their failures because enough time passes so that the public (and progressives themselves) forget their promises that Everything Would Be Better if only we passed their latest comprehensive program. Not this time. The false claims of imminent apocalypse are still fresh in the public mind. In fact, the newspapers are still running Lifestyle Section-type stories about "going green to save the planet." Inhofe has a priceless opportunity to humiliate a lot of people. Hope he doesn't let this go to waste.
