The Obama Administration has been accused of using its stimulus, health care reform, and bailouts to create a European-style social democratic state. Peter R. Orszag, President Obama’s budget director who recently announced his engagement, on Wednesday released a statement confirming that his previous girlfriend had a baby in November.

The statement, which Mr. Orszag issued jointly with the woman, Claire Milonas, a shipping heiress from New York, said: “We were in a committed relationship until the spring of 2009. In November, Claire gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Although we are no longer together, we are both thrilled that she is happy and healthy, and we would hope that everyone will respect her privacy.”

Mr. Orszag, 41, announced just after Christmas that he had become engaged to Bianna Golodryga, an ABC News correspondent whom he met in May at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner

Mr. Orszag, who formerly was director of the Congressional Budget Office and an economic adviser in the Clinton administration, has two young children with his former wife. They divorced in 2005.

The obvious question: when does he find the time to do his job? Perhaps this is why his budget projections never seem to add up.

More seriously, you have to wonder if Orszag is at all embarrassed by this. Is he ready to be the first budget director with a baby mama? Is his current hot girlfriend troubled by the fact that her recent predecessor is pregnant? And, I guess having a mother who is a "shipping heiress" can take the sting out of a life without a father, but still ... this doesn't sound like a kid whose life relationship with her dad is going to be any more than a monthly support check. And, shipping heiress or not, the mom sounds like just another nebbishy liberal woman who can't hold on to a man, but can rationalize things away by pretending to a pseudo-sophisticated "arrangement" with her ex.

Question: how long before Orszag is involved in a Woody Allen-esque roundelay with a step-daughter?
